Today I found a list of nifty Twitter applications and I wanted to give some a try. I was not behind or under my laptop so I could only use the Windows programs. Some had to be downloaded first while others have a website where I could login. On all applications I can use my Twitter username and password.
The first one I tried is MobyPicture where I could upload pictures through my mobile and then it gets transported to Flickr, Hyves, MobyPicture itself and Twitter, although there is no picture on the last one, just a link. I like these services that are multi platform and at least something more is happening to my Hyves and Flickr accounts. There are some ways to follow hashtags on MobyPicture but I have to figure this out later. You can also connect with friends.
Then I figured out Bigtweet, which is an icon to be dragged to the toolbar of the browser. When this icon is clicked on a pop-up appears in which a message can be typed and also special unicode characters can be used, like a simple smiley or music notes. There’s a button that let’s you make a 280 character tweet but actually it will be split into two tweets, too bad. But if you are using a browser already, what’s the point of having a special button if you can go to the Twitter site too?
Next application I tried was MadTwitter, this has to be downloaded first and then looks like a very simple MSN Messenger although transparent and black. The flaws are there are no links in the tweets I can click on and when I type a tweet it doesn’t show that I’ve been using the tool, and for me that’s part of the fun. The thing I did like is that this application disappears in the systray.
The last thing I used was TwitPic, a site where I can browse my computer and upload a photo or send one through my phone (which I still have to try here). I checked for a nice photo and it shows on the site and the link will show on Twitter. They have a tool that makes pictures visible on Twitter but in Firefox 3 under Windows XP it was not working. When I type too much text it doesn’t show on Twitter but it does on TwitPic though. Other users can also leave a comment which will turn into an @reply. Also the shortcuts to the pictures are small and neat, like http://twitpic.com/rnlc. When I click on the location a map appears showing where the picture was made, although I had to add this information first.
