Only on this particular screenshot you can only see half conversations, so what is the added value to an outsider?

Reconsidering YouTube, the Past, the Present and the Future of Interactive Art

11 November, 2008

Last week I had an idea for a paper, in class we had a discussion on developments in art. I would like to extend it from the bohèmien period through this digital age to the next period, which is still unknown to most people, even to me. Here I mean the future of art as we know it. I take the website YouTube as a case study to see what influence art has here and what can be done on art at this point in time compared to what was possible before the Internet existed in its present form. Then I would like to see what the possibilities are to extend YouTube into the nearby future and take art to the next level, Read the rest of this entry ?

Wikipedia Entries

26 September, 2008

This week I wanted to add another page to the ever growing Wikipedia and could only come up with an entry for the Dutch Wikipedia on a statue of a blue man carrying a blue violin case. The statue doesn’t have a head and the figure is running towards the tram stop. A long time ago I added a page on papercutting and on Tyvek, which is artificial paper. On the English Wikipedia I added a page on Sandy Stone, an academic theorist, artist, performer and Associate Professor. Concurrently she is Wolfgang Kohler Professor of Media and Performance at the European Graduate School EGS. My first page was very small but now it’s a full page, build by others. Usually I don’t log on too much there to look around and add stuff.

Radio Commercials

24 September, 2008

Every morning I wake up at the sound of my alarm clock and the radio (channel: classic rock city fm) and while I try to open my eyes and keep them open I wonder about the radio commercials that are all about urls! The radio is a very old medium and the use of urls is still considered new media, and there’s this connection between the two through these commercials. So I guess the Internet did not kill the radio like the video did in the song below;

Privacy Online

13 August, 2008

What is the freedom we have on network websites like Hyves and Facebook? Just this month a women was convicted for having written bad notes about her ex on her page on Hyves. This page however was only visible to her friends she added there, not for people she didn’t know. So her spokesman said it’s like saying things to your friends in the privacy of your own home. These friends talked about the notes and the rumours reached the ex of the convicted women and he pressed charges. I think it’s logical that you cannot say anything on a public website if it’s discriminating, but if only a select group of people can read it, then I don’t think it’s a public website anymore. My profiles on Hyves and Facebook are not visible for anyone but for my friends only, and according to the case I just described I should be careful what to say to them? What if I would write a private message to them? Could it be an offence if I write anything discriminating? Aren’t these notes the same as e-mails then? What is the value of a private profile if you cannot write about things that matter to you? The boundaries of these network websites are not set but the makers are working on that, but so is the law and judges. I am curious and worried what are the possibilities and restrictions in the near future. I feel as if the eye of Big Brother is looking over my shoulder right now, as I write this down for you to read.

Facebook Applications I

12 August, 2008

After having a talk with a friend yesterday about online advertisement and that it should not be a tv commercial put online we were thinking and discussing Facebook applications. To get people and teenagers involved with a brand or an organization we should get them interested in a game and earn points there and build their own world or little environment. They could either support the brand if they eat hamburgers of drive a car, they could also support a health organization. The thing is that we have web 2.0 now and we need to have people interact with each other in different and new ways than the old days from before the Internet. The growing popularity of social networks can help here. We need to mobilize people to get things done. if this works with brands then it could work with other things that can be branded, like politics.

Abstract Thesis (English)

8 August, 2008

Through increasing possibilities of culture jamming online, like politic video’s on YouTube it’s becoming more unclear what sources lie behind a certain video or parody and who owns these images and logo’s. Because of the heavy use of logo’s and brand images in the public domain these are now owned by the consumers and do no longer belong to large corperate companies.

Key words:

Culture jamming, adbusting, media convergentie, agency, logo’s

Heath Ledger on YouTube

23 January, 2008

This morning I was shocked to hear that the actor Heath Ledger (28), the blond cowboy from Brokeback Mountain, was found dead in his apartment. Then I was surprised by the speed YouTube filled itself with video’s about the incident and from people who felt sorry for him. Shocking were also the video’s of reporters who confronted famous people with the question what they thought of his death.

APA/Mark tijdslijn

3 December, 2007

Al vroeg is GPS gebruikt om informatie uit te wisselen of om tekeningen te maken op de kaart van Amsterdam (project De Waag). Objecten taggen, of zelfs mensen is pas later mogelijk geworden.
